\na computer program for determining the equilibrium temperatures and
\nheat flow rates in a network of heat conducting and dissipating
\ncomponents. The thermal network analysis implemented by the program
\nis quite general but is most immediately applicable to
\nself-contained bearing assemblies such as dry rubbing bearings,
\nrolling element bearings, fluid film bearings lubricated by oil or
\ngrease, and oil-impregnated porous bearings. The program
\nincorporates representations of a number of standard parts, such as
\nshaft and bush parts, that can be combined to model the heat
\ngeneration, conduction and dissipation (by convection and
\nradiation) in the complete assembly.<\/p>\n
\nestimated so that wear rates and load limits can be determined or
\noperating film thickness and power loss be estimated. Also, an
\nestimate of reservoir or sump temperature might allow thermal
\ndegradation of lubricants and lubricant life to be assessed. The
\ntemperatures at other points in the assembly might also need to be
\ndetermined. For example, bearing temperatures are usually measured
\nat the bearing back rather than at the friction surface and it may
\nbe required to predict this temperature for comparison with test
\nresults. Temperatures at external surfaces may also be required for
\nassessment of any safety hazard.<\/p>\n
\nidentify thermal conditions that could lead to problems or failure
\nin operation. For example, if the predicted temperature for the
\ninner race of a rolling bearing were considerably higher than that
\nof the outer race a loss of diametral clearance, and consequential
\nrisk of thermal runaway, would be indicated.<\/p>\n
