The effect of changing the<br \/>\nstress concentration by improving the weld shape by grinding or<br \/>\ntungsten inert gas welding is shown graphically by plotting<br \/>\nalternating stress against endurance for longitudinal and<br \/>\ntransverse welds compared respectively with data from ESDU 75016<br \/>\nand 76007 for untreated welds. The effect of introducing<br \/>\ncompressive stresses by shot-peening is similarly compared with the<br \/>\nsame ESDU data for untreated welds. These cases all use results<br \/>\nwith zero mean stress. For longitudinal welds stress relieved by<br \/>\nheat treatment, the fatigue strength at three different mean<br \/>\nstresses is compared graphically with the untreated weld data from<br \/>\nESDU 76007, while for longitudinal welds treated by spot-heating or<br \/>\nspot-pressing only zero mean stress data are available for<br \/>\ncomparison with data from ESDU 76007.
